Baked Rice Pudding

There is nothing better than a warming old fashioned dessert on a cold and wet day.

Rice pudding is a good way to use up leftover rice.

A good way to make rice pudding easily is to keep 1/2 cup quantities of leftover cooked rice in the freezer.

Rowena’s Weekend Breakfast

The weekend is a good time to do those things you may not normally get to do, like eating a relaxed cafe-style hot breakfast.

Here is Rowena’s version of a hot breakfast.  Super yummy, it is also sensible as it is a bit lighter than a traditional fry-up.

Macaroni and Cheese

Macaroni and Cheese is one of Rowena’s all time favourite meals to cook and eat.

Whenever it’s her birthday and Julia is cooking dinner for her, this is what Rowena requests.

Rowena:- “I know it’s a bit daggy and really a kiddies meal but I am happy to admit that I love this meal!”

Avocadoes have come down a bit in price recently. When they are cheap and good quality the Sensible Sisters like to make Mexican for dinner. This is how they make fresh Guacamole that they use to top Nachos or Tacos.

This dish is so easy and is also nice as a dip served with crackers.

Vegie Lasagne

Rowena:- “Vegie lasagne is a really good alternative to beef lasagne. This recipe makes a large dish and will easily feed 8 people. I use light ricotta cheese instead of  bechamel sauce. It makes it a much quicker dish to assemble and works really well.

My fiance often asks for lasagne. I prefer vegetarian lasagne to the beef so I take it in turns alternating between beef and vegie.”

Potatoes 3 Ways

Rowena:- “Everybody loves roast potatoes! I realise that some people like to watch their carb intake but if you are feeding a large group of people potatoes always make a nice side dish. I also find even children who may be fussy eaters will nearly always eat potatoes.

Here are my favourite 3 ways of cooking them.”

Rowena:- “This is a often served in Tapas bars and as a cafe dish. I don’t like ordering this when I’m out because it is a dish that when made at home always tastes better and is much cheaper.”

Mushroom Meatballs

Some people have a problem with using tinned soups as the base for a meal. Most of those same people do not have a problem with opening a jar of ready made simmer sauce. If you think about it logically, there is no difference. Tinned soup was the pre-cursor to today’s Chicken Tonight and similar. The Sisters would not use tinned soup every day but feel that these soups do have their place in the kitchen for the odd easy meal.

Always a winner, the Mushroom Meatballs recipe that is ever popular in Julia’s house was given to her by her mother-in-law. It originally came from the label of a tin of condensed mushroom soup. Not strictly speaking a road test as such, Julia has tweaked the recipe and makes her meatballs in a very specific way using grated carrot, zucchini, onion and garlic.

Sensible Sisters' Anti-Lavender Stance…

Lavender is a very pervasive fragrance. Especially the synthetic variety which is so prevalent at the moment in all sorts of cleaning products from washing powder to toilet cleaner and disinfectant to hand wash. One can even buy lavender scented products to use on his or her person…

The Sensible Sisters do not like the lavender fragrance.
