Trifle is an old fashioned Christmas favourite. Here is Julia’s version which is along the lines of Black Forest cake in a dessert bowl. Here is her recipe for Chocolate Cherry Trifle…

Chocolate Cherry Trifle

  • chocolate cake – I used 300 gram Dutch chocolate cake bar from the supermarket, you could make from a packet or scratch if you prefer
  • a splash of port – optional but gives a nice flavour
  • 2 pkts port wine flavour jelly crystals
  • 1 tub good quality thick chocolate custard
  • 1 jar morello cherries
  • whipped cream, to serve
  • crushed flake bars to garnish

  • make jelly up so that is double strength – use the amount of water you would make to make up one pkt of jelly but add both pkts of jelly
  • set jelly aside and allow to cool in fridge until slightly thickened
  • break cake into smallish chunks and place in the base of a bowl that you are happy to serve from
  • splash cake with port if using
  • gently pour partially set jelly over cake
  • refrigerate until close to serving time
  • when ready to serve, drain desired amount of cherries and place these over jelly and cake layer
  • cover with a thick layer of chocolate custard
  • serve with whipped cream and flake on the side for guests to help themselves
